The Expertise Centre for Gambling (Expertisecentrum Gokken) is dedicated to increase scientific knowledge about (the prevention of) gambling harm, gambling problems and gambling addiction. It does so through knowledge sharing, research, and monitoring, as well as by applying, connecting, and evaluating available knowledge.
Vision of the Expertise Centre
The Expertise Centre approaches gambling as a public health issue. This means that we aim not only to prevent harm to individuals, but also their loved ones and to society as a whole. Gambling harm is caused by a complex interaction of commercial, individual, socioeconomic, political and environmental factors. It is therefore essential that policy, support services and knowledge are developed independently and place health protection at the core.
Documentation available in English
The Expertise Centre publishes its blogs, reports, and factsheets primarily in Dutch. However, due to the international nature of the subject, the centre also aims to make its most seminal work available in English. The publications listed below are available in English.
9 translations Dutch gambling warning text
Licensed gambling operators in the Netherlands are legally required to inform consumers about gambling risks when advertising gambling products. In 2021, a warning text was selected by a committee of independent addiction treatment organisations from a list of five texts developed by a behavioural change agency (D&B), under the guidance of the Trimbos-institute. To facilitate non-native speakers in the Netherlands, the existing warning text was professionally translated in 2022 into different languages. This document provides the English summary of the original Dutch report.
Knowledge Development
We conduct research on gambling and its potential harms for individuals, their families, and society. These harms may include significant financial losses, relationship difficulties, stress, unemployment, or the worsening of poverty.
We also collect, evaluate, and consolidate existing knowledge on gambling, ensuring transparency about the sources used. In addition, we contribute to gambling-related research and support researchers conducting studies on this topic within the Netherlands.
Knowledge Sharing and Application
We share our knowledge with professionals who work with people who gamble, as well as with policymakers and other practitioners. Drawing on the Expertise Centre's scientific insights, we support professionals in making informed decisions to prevent gambling harm and to improve the treatment of gambling problems.
We also share our knowledge with researchers, enabling further development of knowledge on the prevention of gambling harm, gambling problems, and gambling addiction.
Building Connections
We collaborate with a range of experts on the topic. In addition, we organise meetings to bring professionals together and provide them with up-to-date information. We also gather insights and knowledge from practical experience. This helps to broaden the available knowledge and strengthens the expertise of all professionals involved.
